Cosmetics and Personal Care


     The advanced economies and active categories, particularly color cosmetics in North America, drove sustained growth in the beauty and personal care market in 2016. As more customers adopt a beauty regimen, analysts predict that Asia Pacific will be the growth engine. Consumer products for cosmetics and body care are included in the Beauty & Personal Care market which consist of Face cosmetics, perfumes, lips, skincare products, and personal care goods including hair care, deodorants, and shaving items. Cosmetics and personal care products are used to clean, beautify, enhance attractiveness, and change the appearance of the human body, as well as to protect their health, improve their well-being, and increase their self-esteem.

Cosmetics and personal care products play an important part in our lives at all phases. Oral care, skin care, sun care, hair care, ornamental cosmetics, body care, and fragrances are the seven categories of cosmetics and personal care products. In order to make personal care and cosmetic products, chemicals are needed where the composition must meet safe standards when used for living things. An example of a chemical used are:

  1. Lauric acid, used to possess anti-microbial and anti-acne properties. It can form monolaurin that is used as a surfactant in cosmetics like deodorant.
  2. Myristic acid, used to manufacture isopropyl myristate, which is used in cosmetics where good absorption through the skin is desired. In facial creams, it is used as an emulsifier.
  3. Refined glycerine, used in cosmetics and toiletries such as lotion, soap, makeup, etc. because it is non-toxic in nature. It is also used to manufacture toothpaste and other oral care products.
  4. Turpentine oil, used in perfume, camphor, cosmetics and varnish industry.
  5. Beta pinene, used as raw material for the synthesis of synthetic fragrance. It is the most important chemical in the perfume industry.
